01 – Control

Initial Thoughts

The first project explores what happens if a draughtsman tries to give up control.

The Extended Arm – Drawings 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5

This exercise was about making marks with vary amount of control over my drawings.

I made the drawing together with my wife. One of us made an exercise the other one drew the practitioner.

I used the same setup for all drawings. The first one started with a pencil mounted on 60cm. I seems that the first drawing is the worst. But giving up control created a feeling of happiness. It was like something or someone was tickling me from the inside of my breast.

Two Pencils – Drawing 6

I had to tape two pencils together and use this unit as a drawing tool. It is difficult or even impossible to draw exact lines since the the second pen spoils the line of the first one. At least that was my initial thought. But I learned that giving up control about a single line opens space for seeing and drawing the whole.

After giving up control I made the boldest, expressiv and accurate (self-) portrait I ever made.

I like the intensive staring. This gaze happens if a draughtsman works for one and a half hour on a drawing.

The drawing has been made with colored pencils and some white gouache to add highlights and white eyeballs.
